Zach Cregger's Resident Evil reboot gave the long-running horror series a huge start at the box office, grossing around $60 million in North America during its first three days in cinemas. That result far exceeded Sony's initial estimate of $40 million, and even surpassed subsequent projections of $53 million to $55 million. The strong debut marks the biggest opening in the franchise's history, eclipsing the previous record-holder Resident Evil: Afterlife, which grossed $60.1 million over its entire North American theatrical run. Internationally, the film pulled in an additional $43.8 million across 62 countries.
The story follows a medical courier, played by Austin Abrams, who finds himself trapped in the middle of a deadly virus outbreak in Raccoon City. The cast also features Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, and Paul Walter Hauser. This success sets a new milestone for Cregger, surpassing the $43.5 million opening of his 2025 film Weapons. Critical reception has been overwhelmingly positive, earning a 96% critic score and a 92% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Cregger has already hinted that this may not be his final installment in the series.
