fell to the lowest level of his presidency, with an overwhelming majority of Americans concerned that the war with Iran will endure, according to a new survey. Just 33% of respondents in the four-day survey approved of Trump's performance in the White House, while 64% disapproved. Trump's approval rating is down from 35% earlier this month, tying the lowest mark of his prior term reached in December 2017.
After returning to the White House last year, Trump's popularity took a hit after he ordered strikes on Iran alongside Israel. The ensuing conflict paralysed a fifth of global oil trade, triggering a surge in gasoline prices that weighs on US households - and on Republican allies defending congressional majorities in November midterm elections.
Trump, who campaigned on keeping inflation in check and avoiding prolonged wars, initially pledged the conflict would take a few weeks. However, Iran has proved resilient, keeping oil trade through the Strait of Hormuz largely bottled up.
Some 80% of Americans - including 87% of Democrats and 71% of Republicans - believe US involvement in Iran will continue for an extended period, while just 16% expect a swift end.
