Britney Spears opens up about 'true damage' of her conservatorship

Britney Spears is revisiting one of the most painful chapters of her life. On Thursday, August 28, the Princess of Pop took to her Instagram to open up about the lasting effects of her 14-year conservatorship, which finally ended in 2021.

"I actually miss the way I respected people so much that there was a genuine mystery of acute oneness when we were together, which was sacred," Spears, 44, began in her lengthy caption. "I feel like, still to this day, people don't realize the real damage that was done to my heart and soul in the conservatorship," she continued. "I was painfully shy, but I got to be someone different on stage."

However, "that game was beyond overdone" for the Grammy-winner when she became a mom to Sean and Jayden, whom she welcomed in 2005 and 2006, respectively, with her then-husband Kevin Federline. "I felt so silly and embarrassed. I think it's easier when you're younger to go there," Spears reflected.

The Toxic hitmaker was placed under a conservatorship in 2008, with her father, Jamie Spears, and attorney Andrew M. Wallet as conservators. The legal arrangement severely restricted her personal and financial freedoms for over a decade before a court ruling restored her independence.
