The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has addressed a circulating notice on its official social media accounts, calling it "false and misleading" and clarifying that no such alert has been issued. A notice circulating on social media claims that answering a call from the number (051) 7080507 could enable fraudsters to steal funds from JazzCash, Easypaisa, and other mobile accounts. The document is fake and was not issued by the PTA.
On September 3, a user on X shared a notice purportedly issued by the PTA, advising people not to answer calls from the said number. "If you receive a call from (051) 7080507, never answer it," the user wrote. "These scammers can vanish money from your JazzCash, Easypaisa, or other mobile accounts in just a few seconds." At the time of writing, the post had received 4,260 views, 95 likes, and 74 reposts. Similar posts have also appeared on Facebook.
The telecommunication regulator has not issued any such notification. Ahmed Shamim, Director General of the PTA's International Relations and Government Affairs Division, confirmed over the phone that the regulator had not issued the advisory. The formatting and wording of the document, therefore, do not represent an official PTA communication.
Verdict: The claim is false. The PTA did not issue the viral notice about calls from (051) 7080507 and alleged theft from mobile payment accounts.
