George Hamilton shares life lesson that matters most

being one of Hollywood's most recognizable faces. But years after an operation left him struggling to recognise his own life, the 87-year-old actor found himself turning to an unlikely source for answers: his own autobiography. In a recent interview with Page Six, Hamilton revealed that an operation about four or five years ago left him "not knowing who I was."  Doctors reportedly told him the condition would last only a few days.

Instead, Hamilton said, it became a much longer journey back to himself. "I had to read my own biography to learn who I was," Hamilton told the outlet. "And I had to think, 'Do I like this person?' I read it through several times and looked at things from my past and I wasn't sure if I had done them." His 2008 memoir, Don't Mind If I Do: My Adventures in Hollywood, suddenly became more than a collection of celebrity stories.

It became something of a personal roadmap. And what Hamilton remembered most wasn't necessarily the Hollywood glamour, famous romances or decades in the spotlight. It was childhood - and the values he learned along the way.

"Other things have come and gone, but kindness and good manners and optimism and belief in something more important than our egos is something people probably don't think I think about, but it's most important to me at this age," he explained. Looking back, Hamilton said the experience changed how he measures a meaningful life. "You realize those are the things that are the valuable things in life once you have lived it," he told the outlet.

"You don't want to learn it too late." At 87, Hamilton may have learned the ultimate Hollywood lesson: the spotlight fades, but kindness sticks around.
