Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Nawaz Sharif has nominated Dr Muhammad Najeeb Naqi for the office of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) president, Punjab Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb said on Wednesday.

"PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif nominated Dr Naqi for the AJK president slot," she said in a post on X, adding that he has been directed to submit his nomination papers for the upcoming election.

According to the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Election Commission, the election for the post will be held on September 24. The office of the AJK president had been vacant since Barrister Sultan Mahmood passed away in January.

Chief Election Commissioner Justice (retd) Ghulam Mustafa Mughal announced the election schedule, stating that nomination papers will be filed on September 19, scrutiny will be conducted the same day, and polling will take place at the Legislative Assembly Secretariat on September 24.
