Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem, real-life spouses since 2010, brought their marriage to the screen together in Florian Zeller's psychological thriller Bunker, which earned a roughly 16-and-a-half-minute standing ovation at its Venice Film Festival premiere on Tuesday, September 8. The reception ranks among the longest in the festival's recent history, trailing only Pedro Almodóvar's The Room Next Door (17 minutes) and Kaouther Ben Hania's The Voice of Hind Rajab (22 minutes) from last year's edition. Cruz was reportedly moved to tears during the ovation, kissing Bardem as the crowd continued applauding well past the ten-minute mark, she later paused to shake hands with fans and called out "Ciao!" as the couple exited the Palazzo del Cinema.

Written, directed and produced by Zeller, Bunker follows Bardem's character, Miguel, a London architect who accepts a morally fraught commission to build a survivalist bunker for a tech billionaire, a decision that leads his wife, Sofia, played by Cruz, to begin questioning their 17-year marriage as the couple is drawn deeper into a world shaped by wealth, paranoia and fear.  Zeller has said he wrote the film specifically with Cruz and Bardem in mind, calling them "an iconic couple" and describing his goal as placing the audience in "a position of deliberate ambiguity" about what exactly they're watching.  The supporting cast includes Stephen Graham, Paul Dano and Patrick Schwarzenegger.
