The Supreme Court will take up on September 16, 2026, the contempt petition filed against the government for not complying with its order directing authorities to shift Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan to Shifa International Hospital for a medical check-up.

A three-member bench of the apex court, headed by Justice Shahid Waheed, had on August 18 ordered the shifting of the PTI founder from Adiala Jail to Shifa International Hospital. However, the government instead shifted the prisoner to Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) Hospital, prompting the PTI to file a contempt petition in the apex court.

As part of efforts for an early hearing, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan on Monday met with Supreme Court Registrar Sohail Laghari. Talking to the media outside the apex court, Gohar said the matter directly concerned the health of the PTI founder, necessitating an urgent hearing.

He said the Registrar informed him that a review petition against the original decision was also pending, and due to the unavailability of judges this week, the contempt plea had been fixed for September 16, 2026, before the same special bench that previously heard the case. Earlier, on August 25, Dr. Uzma Khan, the sister of the PTI founder, had requested an early hearing. The Registrar's Office initially turned down the plea, citing a backlog of 94 similar criminal original petitions and standard fixation policies. However, it was later decided to fix the contempt petition alongside the main case on September 16, 2026.
