Vitruvias Therapeutics Inc. has issued a voluntary recall of one of its thyroid tablet batches after testing confirmed the product could be 'superpotent,' or stronger than intended. The Food and Drug Administration confirmed that the affected product, Thyroid Tablets USP 30mg with lot number 504950 and National Drug Code 69680-166-00, was distributed nationwide between January 31 and September 30, 2025. About 1,955 of 3,655 units issued have been sold, the company stated.
Using very strong thyroid tablets may result in hyperthyroidism or an overactive thyroid, giving rise to problems such as weight loss, inability to withstand hot temperatures, fatigue, irritability, muscle weakness, high blood pressure, chest pain, and tachycardia. Elderly individuals, expectant mothers, and infants are more susceptible to these side effects.
The company has not received any reports of adverse reactions related to the recall as of Monday, August 24. The recall process began following the confirmation of the drug's potential superpotency through test results. The pills have an expiry date of September 30, 2026.
Patients currently using the medication are warned against stopping its use without consulting a healthcare provider. Vitruvias Therapeutics will contact distributors to halt the distribution of the drug and destroy all recalled products.
