ESPN insider Shams Charania reported that prior to acquiring forward Jonathan Kuminga, the Timberwolves explored multiple trade options for Green before finding a landing spot with the Jazz, who were looking to add another 3-and-D wing. Trading Green's whopping $14.7 million deal provides Minnesota breathing space to sign Kuminga to a two-year contract valued at $12.4 million.
The addition of Kuminga, who is due more than $6 million next season, pushed the franchise roughly $2 million over the cap, meaning the signing could not become official until the Timberwolves made an additional move to remain under the second apron. Monday, August 31, serves as the deadline for NBA teams to waive and stretch a player to create cap savings this season, though players must first clear a 48-hour waiver period, making Saturday, August 29, the deadline if Minnesota wished to utilize this route.
Meanwhile, Konchar is set to make $6.2 million next season, while Williams is slated to earn $6 million in net salary, netting the Timberwolves roughly $2.5 million in cap space from the trade. The franchise continues to adjust its roster to remain competitive while staying strictly compliant with league salary cap regulations.
