United States (U.S.) President Donald Trump is proposing aggressive measures against Canada after trade talks failed between the two countries and a heated exchange of words continued. The 78-year-old Republican leader has floated the idea of renaming Lake Ontario to Lake America as the trade dispute with Canada escalated.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, the 47th President of the United States (POTUS) wrote, "The United States is giving serious consideration to changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America in that we don't expect to do much business with Ontario any longer." He concluded the post with his signature remarks: "Thank you for your attention to this matter! TRUMP." His son Eric Trump also supported the president's proposal, sharing a screenshot of Trump's post on X with the caption, "Absolutely!"
One X user shared the history of the lake, stating, "The lake isn't named after the province. The province was named after the lake in 1867," adding that the lake's name is Iroquoian - oniatari:io (meaning "the lake of shining waters"). The netizen added, "It's been called that for centuries longer than either country has existed."
This development comes after trade talks failed and the U.S. imposed a 50% tariff on $20 billion worth of imports from Canada. Ottawa vowed a "dollar-for-dollar" retaliation against Trump's aggressive measures. Earlier, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney canceled negotiations with the U.S., stating, "Last-minute changes in the U.S.-proposed terms were unfair, uneconomic, and called into question the reliability of any deal."
