The United States on Friday announced the approval of a $5 billion sale of bombs, guidance kits and other equipment to Saudi Arabia, which has been repeatedly attacked during the regional conflicts. The proposed sale will improve Saudi Arabia's airborne defense capability to counter current and future regional threats, strengthen its homeland defense, and improve interoperability with systems operated by US forces and other Gulf region partners, the US State Department said in a statement.
The sale will also support the foreign policy goals and national security objectives of the United States by improving the security of a major non-NATO ally, the department added. Saudi Arabia has been targeted with drone and missile strikes by various regional actors, prompting Washington to bolster the kingdom's defensive posture through advanced military hardware supplies.
Meanwhile, the US Treasury Department announced on Friday that it imposed new Iran-related sanctions on a Turkish investment bank and two subsidiaries as part of ongoing efforts to increase economic pressure on Tehran. The targeted entities include Istanbul-based investment bank Golden Global Yatirim Bankasi, asset manager Golden Global Portfoy, and leasing company Golden Global Varlik Kiralama.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that the latest action aims to cut off illicit financial networks utilized by adversarial regimes. Furthermore, Western powers including the US, Britain, France and Germany are seeking a resolution by the UN nuclear watchdog's board to report Iran to the UN Security Council over non-compliance issues.
