The costume, named the "Kids' glows under blacklight circus clown Halloween costume bodysuit," is a black and orange bodysuit with a ruffled collar, black gloves, a miniature top hat, and a face covering featuring an exaggerated wide grin and large teeth.

Priced at $25, the outfit was marketed using a Black child model, sparking outrage on social media over comparisons to offensive Jim Crow-era depictions. Following the backlash, Target issued an apology, stating: "As a company, we know we got this wrong, and we are deeply sorry. The costume is offensive and should never have been part of our assortment."

The retailer confirmed that all sales have been halted and an internal investigation is underway. "We know this is especially hurtful for our Black guests, team members, and partners. Removing the costume is an important step, and we are looking closely at how this happened and what needs to change," Target added.

The incident has once again highlighted the importance of corporate sensitivity and rigorous quality control in product design and marketing. Consumer advocacy groups have praised the swift removal of the item while emphasizing the need for companies to thoroughly vet their offerings before bringing them to the market.
