Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has spoken about the future of physical media ahead of the new release of next-gen console Project Helix. Sharma, Xbox boss in an interview with BBC that appeared on August 26, stays quiet on the future of physical media. When asked about whether company's next console, codenamed as Project Helix, will have a disc drive or not, she said, "This next generation, we have to be thinking about efficiency and affordability alongside performance." She emphasised the need to adopt an affordability and efficiency approach and added, "All of the industry needs to start to innovate on affordability and efficiency."
Although Sharma neither confirmed nor denied a disc drive for Project Helix, she appeared to be well-versed with the buzz surrounding physical games. "I know players love physical media, and I know there's a lot of benefits in digital media, and I want to make sure people have a choice. There are stacks of games on everybody's shelves," she said. Xbox's CEO Sharma's reply does provide some insight into Xbox's future consoles having a disc drive to cater to the demands of gamers for physical media instead of going all-out digital.
The company last week officially announced its disc-to-digital program during a convention, Gamescom, that was held in Germany. The program will become available for Xbox Insiders beginning on August 31, before rolling out to all players on a date yet to be confirmed. Industry analysts are closely monitoring these developments as major gaming brands transition toward hybrid models.
As gaming technology continues to evolve, balancing digital convenience with physical preservation remains a core challenge for platform holders. Consumer feedback during the upcoming trial phases will likely shape the final hardware specifications and market strategy for Project Helix in the coming months.
