An increase of Rs37,307 billion in the federal government's debt during nearly three years and nine months of Shehbaz Sharif's tenure as Prime Minister has been revealed. In comparison, the federal government's debt increased by Rs18,323 billion during nearly three years and nine months of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government. Details have emerged based on documents of the State Bank of Pakistan.
During the nearly three-year-and-nine-month period covering Shehbaz Sharif's first and current terms as prime minister, the increase in the federal government's debt was 104 percent higher than during the corresponding period of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government. The federal government's debt increased by Rs37,307 billion over this period, compared with an increase of Rs18,323 billion during approximately three years and nine months of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government.
According to the State Bank of Pakistan documents, during Shehbaz Sharif's first tenure, from April 2022 to July 2023, a period of 16 months, the federal government's debt increased by Rs18,764 billion. Meanwhile, during the initial months of the current Shehbaz Sharif government, the federal government's debt further increased by Rs18,543 billion.
The documents show that by March 2022, the last month of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government, the total volume of the federal government's debt stood at Rs43,000 billion. It had increased to Rs61,777 billion by July 2023, before the caretaker government took over. The federal government's debt further rose to Rs83,883 billion subsequently. Prior to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government coming to power, the federal government's debt stood at Rs24,690 billion.
