Greta Gerwig defends Narnia vision as trailer sparks fan debate

Greta Gerwig is standing by her creative vision for Narnia as the new trailer for the upcoming prequel, set to Led Zeppelin's 'Stairway to Heaven', divides longtime fans. Speaking during a Q&A with Stephen Colbert in New York City on Tuesday, October 13, the award-winning filmmaker insisted that the 'epic' rock anthem captures the essence of the story.

"It's about a spiritual journey. It's about the true path of enlightenment and spirituality, and then this path of false idols and the wrong roads you can go down," Gerwig, 43, explained, per Entertainment Weekly.

"And I was like, 'This is exactly the story of this movie.'" "They had not let it be used in anything," Gerwig said. "I was so moved that they allowed me to use the song." The Barbie director personally presented the project to the song's writers, Robert Plant and Jimmy Page, who ultimately gave their approval.

She said both musicians admire Narnia author C.S. Lewis and connected with the story's themes.

"They did it because they saw the heart of the story in the film and they, too, love C.S. Lewis, and they have a reverence for his work," she explained.

The adaptation stars David McKenna, Beatrice Campbell, Daniel Craig, Emma Mackey, and Carey Mulligan, with Meryl Streep voicing Aslan. The production has faced intense scrutiny from purists who argue that the musical choice clashes with the fantasy aesthetic of the beloved literary series.

Despite the backlash, Gerwig remains confident that the film will resonate with audiences upon its release. She emphasized that the collaboration with the legendary rock band was a pivotal moment in the film's development, providing a unique sonic landscape that aligns with the narrative's deeper, more philosophical undertones.

Industry analysts suggest that the inclusion of such a high-profile track indicates the studio's massive investment in the franchise. The film is expected to be a major contender during the upcoming awards season, given the star-studded cast and the director's track record.

Fans have taken to social media to express their mixed feelings, with some praising the bold artistic choice while others remain skeptical about the tone. Gerwig's defense is seen as a strategic move to manage expectations before the full marketing campaign kicks into high gear.

As the release date approaches, the focus remains on how the film will balance the classic source material with modern cinematic sensibilities. The involvement of Meryl Streep as the voice of Aslan has been widely praised as a masterstroke in casting.

Ultimately, the success of the project will depend on whether the audience embraces this new interpretation. For now, the debate continues to fuel anticipation for what promises to be one of the most discussed films of the year.
