King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who ascended the throne of Uganda's Tooro Kingdom at just three years old, has died at 34. The world's youngest reigning monarch was receiving medical treatment in the United States due to a critical illness. He passed away at around 10:00 p.m. local time on Thursday, August 27, the Tooro Kingdom's prime minister confirmed early Friday.
His death was announced by Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki, who described it as an immeasurable loss but offered no specific details about his illness. Oyo inherited the throne after the death of his father, King Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III, in 1995. Oyo was crowned on September 12, 1995, as king at the tender age of three years, earning him a place in Guinness World Records as the world's youngest monarch.
A regency council administered affairs before Oyo turned 18, after which a formal coronation took place in 2010. Although Uganda is a republic with a presidential system, traditional monarchies such as Tooro still hold significant cultural importance. King Oyo ruled over two million people as the 13th king of a kingdom formed in the early 19th century.
Unmarried during his lifetime, he was widely regarded as Uganda's most eligible bachelor and strongly advocated for youth empowerment, education, environmental conservation, and HIV/AIDS awareness.
