King Haakon Mourns Beloved Aunt Princess Astrid Days After Father's Funeral

King Haakon is mourning another devastating loss after his beloved aunt, Princess Astrid, died just two days after attending the state funeral of his father, King Harald. The Norwegian royal family announced Princess Astrid's death on 11 September, just two weeks after King Harald died on 28 August.

Her final public appearance came at her brother's funeral on 9 September, where she joined her family and the nation in bidding farewell to the much-loved monarch. In the wake of her death, he issued a deeply personal tribute to his aunt, remembering her not only as a senior member of the Royal House but as a source of strength for the family.

"Throughout her long life, Princess Astrid represented the Royal House in a warm and dutiful manner," Haakon said. He recalled how Astrid was just 22 when she was called upon to take on the role of First Lady following the death of his grandmother, Crown Princess Märtha.

Her public life was shaped by a particular concern for vulnerable people, with Haakon praising her commitment to care and inclusion. He also remembered her as someone who remained loyal to her duties while bringing warmth, energy and a distinctive personality to her work. "Her passing is a great loss for us."
