Nicolas Cage's Spider-Man universe just hit an unexpected dead end. Spider-Noir, the Prime Video and MGM+ series starring Cage as a hard-luck private investigator with a superhero-sized secret, has been canceled after just one season, despite strong reviews and a surprisingly impressive awards showing. The series premiered in May with eight episodes and marked Cage's first regular television role.

It earned a 92% critics score and 90% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, while landing 11 Emmy nominations - the most of any Prime Video series this year. Still, apparently even a little awards-season love couldn't save this spider. The official logline reads: "Spider-Noir tells the story of Ben Reilly (Cage), a seasoned, down-on-his-luck private investigator in 1930s New York, who is forced to grapple with his past life following a deeply personal tragedy, as the city's one and only superhero."

The series was also designed as the opening chapter of Sony Pictures Television and Amazon Studios' plans to expand its universe of Marvel characters. Alongside Cage, the cast featured Lamorne Morris, Li Jun Li, Karen Rodriguez, Abraham Popoola, Jack Huston and Brendan Gleeson. Oren Uziel and Steve Lightfoot served as co-showrunners, with Harry Bradbeer directing the first two episodes.

Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, Amy Pascal and others were also among the executive producers. For fans who thought Cage's Spider-Man era was just getting started, this cancellation makes one thing clear: the multiverse can apparently end a story before it even gets comfortable.
