The Nobel Sustainability Trust (NST) has formally recognised Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif for her efforts to promote climate resilience, forest restoration, wildlife conservation, environmental protection and air-quality improvement through technology-driven governance. The recognition also acknowledges Punjab's growing reliance on modern technology, real-time monitoring, digital platforms and data-driven systems to tackle air pollution and smog and to strengthen forest and wildlife management, according to an official communication issued by the trust.

The NST is an independent foundation established in Switzerland in 2007 by members of the Nobel family and is chaired by Peter Nobel. It brings together heads of state and government, ministers, international organisations, scientists, business leaders, philanthropists and innovators to advance sustainable development and address major environmental challenges. Under Ms Maryam's leadership, Punjab has expanded the use of environmental data, digital monitoring and modern enforcement mechanisms to improve air quality and respond to smog and pollution. The systems are designed to monitor pollution levels, identify major emission sources, assess environmental risks and facilitate timely responses to deteriorating air-quality conditions.

The trust has also recognised Punjab's increasing use of digital technology, data, remote monitoring, modern surveillance and technology-enabled management systems in forestry and wildlife conservation. These initiatives are aimed at strengthening forest protection and restoration, monitoring natural resources, conserving wildlife and biodiversity, curbing illegal activities affecting forests and wildlife, and enhancing the province's capacity to respond to environmental threats.

In a communication to the chief minister, NST Chairman Peter Nobel highlighted Punjab's shift towards data-driven and technology-enabled governance as a benchmark for international environmental reform. As part of the recognition, Ms Maryam has been invited to attend and address the NST Award Gala and Summit 2026 in Hong Kong, which is expected to bring together world leaders, representatives of the Nobel family, global scientists, sustainability experts, policymakers, international organisations, business executives, philanthropists and innovators.
