Captain (retd) Muhammad Safdar's controversial remarks regarding women and cancer patients have triggered a severe backlash across social media platforms, prompting his wife, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, to publicly express her deep regret and sorrow over the incident. Speaking at a Khatm-e-Nabuwwat gathering in Chiniot earlier this week, Safdar launched a scathing criticism against the slogan 'Mera Jism, Meri Marzi' (My Body, My Choice).
During his speech, he questioned why women who assert absolute control over their physical bodies seek prayers and religious intervention when diagnosed with serious, life-threatening illnesses such as cancer. He argued that individuals who claim complete ownership over their bodies should theoretically be able to cure themselves when they fall ill.
He added that the human body ultimately remains under divine control, and human autonomy has strict limitations when faced with mortal diseases. On Friday, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz responded to a social media post on X regarding Safdar's remarks, describing the unfolding situation as heartbreaking.
She took the opportunity to highlight the silent, often invisible struggles that women face behind closed doors in their daily lives. "The silent battles a woman, a wife, fights behind closed doors...
The strength she must find even when she feels like breaking. Some battles are fought in silence, and some wounds are invisible," she wrote in her heartfelt message, which quickly gained widespread attention and discussion online.
The public response to her statement was largely supportive, with many commentators praising the Chief Minister for distancing herself from her husband's insensitive remarks. Civil society members, political analysts, and digital creators noted that addressing such controversial statements from a family member requires significant moral courage.
Former federal minister Fawad Chaudhry also weighed in on the matter, appreciating the Punjab Chief Executive for adopting a clear stance against the controversial narrative. Political observers noted that this intervention helped mitigate political damage and addressed public outrage effectively.
Journalist Benazir Shah remarked that taking a public stand of this nature demonstrates genuine empathy, writing, "Maryam Nawaz Sharif, may you find more strength." The commentary resonated strongly with the public, shifting the narrative toward compassion and solidarity with cancer patients. Senior journalist Ajmal Jami shared his personal experience, stating that his mother had been a cancer patient and God knows how difficult those testing times were for their family.
He added that her survival was nothing short of a miracle and called Safdar's remarks deeply shameful and condemnable. Medical professionals, cancer survivors, and advocacy groups have also condemned the remarks, emphasizing that cancer is a physical ailment that affects anyone regardless of ideology or personal beliefs.
They urged public figures to exercise caution and empathy when discussing health issues.
