Shailene Woodley Talks About Her Spider-Man Role That Vanished

Shailene Woodley is recalling a forgotten Spider-Man casting. The two-time Golden Globe Award nominee was actually cast and filmed scenes as Mary Jane Watson for The Amazing Spider-Man 2, but all of her scenes were ultimately cut. The Secret Life of the American Teenager star revealed she was a huge Spider-Man fan, so getting the role was a dream come true. She filmed several scenes with Andrew Garfield, who played Peter Parker, only to be told about a year later that Mary Jane would no longer appear in the movie.

"And then, we filmed like three scenes together, me and Andrew Garfield. And then, like a year later, they were like, 'So, you're not in the movie anymore,'" the Big Little Lies alum said in a talk with SAG-AFTRA. "And I was like, 'What? What do you mean?' And they're like, 'We've introduced a lot of new characters in this last one, and we're going to wait for whatever happens between Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield.'"

The filmmakers seemingly wanted to focus on Parker's relationship with Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) and planned to introduce Mary Jane later, potentially after Gwen's death. However, that planned follow-up movie never happened, meaning The Fault in Our Stars actress' version of Mary Jane never got the chance to appear on screen.

"That's what I was told, but again, who knows what the truth is? I could have been terrible," she quipped. "And they were like, 'We can't do this.'" The interesting twist is that Garfield has said he would consider playing Spider-Man again, but only if the story were something unusual or "very strange." If his version of Spider-Man ever returns, Woodley could finally appear as Mary Jane, making her deleted role relevant again after more than a decade.
