Southern Nazarene University (SNU) sophomore safety Tyler Ulrich has died after a five-day battle with what the school described as a "traumatic injury." Ulrich, 21, sustained a head injury during a game against Ouachita Baptist; his school confirmed his passing on Thursday, October 15, 2026.
The Division II private school based in Bethany, Oklahoma, did not disclose the specific cause of his death or the nature of the injury. The school shared a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating, "It is with heavy hearts that we share the loss of our SNU football player, Tyler Ulrich."
It added, "This loss is deeply felt across our campus. Our hearts are with his family, friends, teammates, and everyone who knew him." Ulrich suffered the injury during a 49-14 loss on Saturday, October 10, with the game delayed for nearly an hour while he received emergency medical care before being transported to a hospital.
Ulrich, an Azle, Texas, native, was in his third season at SNU and had 16 starts in 20 appearances, including six starts this year. He ranked third on the team with 36 tackles.
Following the tragedy, athletic directors, coaches, and fellow student-athletes expressed profound sorrow across social media platforms, paying tribute to his dedication on and off the field. The university administration announced that grief counselors would be made available on campus to support students and staff coping with the sudden loss.
University officials emphasized that student safety and well-being remain their top priorities as they review the circumstances surrounding the incident in coordination with medical professionals. Tributes have poured in from athletic conferences nationwide, highlighting Ulrich's sportsmanship, leadership qualities, and positive impact on the SNU community.
Memorial services are currently being planned by the family, with details to be announced in the coming days as athletic leagues consider additional measures to honor his memory and raise awareness regarding head safety in collegiate athletics.
