Adam Driver has confirmed he will not return for HBO's Girls revival, and has wished the returning cast "the best of luck". The 42-year-old actor, who played Adam Sackler, Hannah's on-again, off-again boyfriend, said in an interview with CinemaBlend that he will not reprise the role in the five-episode limited run.
HBO announced the revival in October, with production scheduled to begin in 2027, a decade after the original series ended. Lena Dunham will return as Hannah, alongside Allison Williams as Marnie, Jemima Kirke as Jessa, Zosia Mamet as Shoshanna and Andrew Rannells as Elijah.
Dunham described coming back to the characters as "a gift" in a newsletter. The original series ran for six seasons and ended in 2017.
All of it is available to stream on HBO Max. Driver's absence comes against the backdrop of claims in Dunham's memoir, Famesick.
In the book, she alleges that he once "hurled a chair at the wall" near her and was at times "verbally aggressive." At the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, where he was promoting Paper Tiger, Driver was asked about the memoir and said he had "no comment on any of that."
Dunham has said she has not spoken to Driver since the show finished, and she has described their on-screen chemistry as "really rich." The revival will now proceed without one of the series' best-known characters, whose relationship with Hannah was central to the show.
