Bolivian authorities have confirmed that nine people were killed in two explosions at a military facility in Viacha, about 30 kilometres from La Paz, with rescuers continuing to search the rubble for victims. The ninth body was recovered on Monday and taken to a morgue for identification. The blasts occurred Friday afternoon at the Bolívar Regiment, in an area used to store pyrotechnic material.
Army Commander Hector Alarcón said the death toll could have been higher because many personnel were away from the base taking part in a recreational bicycle ride. "Our priority remains finding our comrades who are still missing and providing answers to their families as soon as possible," Alarcón said earlier in the rescue operation.
At least 84 people have been treated for injuries, Health Minister Marcela Flores said, with 31 still hospitalised. The first blast was believed to involve black powder used in pyrotechnic material, while the second was described by officials as considerably more powerful, with its cause still under investigation.
President Rodrigo Paz said the blast appeared to have been an accident involving the improper handling of explosives, although authorities have not concluded. "Our Armed Forces are reviewing their protocols, and everything needed to provide greater safety, not only for enlisted personnel and officers, but also for nearby residents living close to military bases," Paz said, announcing a period of national mourning and calling for the tragedy not to be politicised.
