The New England Patriots and Christian Gonzalez agreed to a four-year contract extension that makes him the NFL's highest-paid cornerback. According to multiple media reports, Gonzalez inked a four-year deal valued at $135 million, which includes $102 million in guaranteed money, late Monday night.
Previously, Devon Witherspoon had signed a four-year contract extension valued at $132 million with the Seattle Seahawks just last month, a deal that also included more than $101 million in guaranteed money. Gonzalez, drafted in the 2023 NFL draft as the No. 17 pick, has established himself as an All-Pro and Pro Bowl cornerback, making this his first eligible offseason for a contract extension.
The whopping $135 million extension puts to rest rumors surrounding whether Gonzalez would remain with the Patriots. Gonzalez had been fully involved in training camp until suffering a lower-leg injury on August 10 during one-on-one drills with receiver A.K. However, the star cornerback returned to practice on August 24 and traveled to Seattle for Wednesday's season opener.
Gonzalez has delivered stellar performances when the stakes were highest, recording a crucial interception in an AFC Championship victory over the Denver Broncos and tallying four tackles and three pass deflections in the Super Bowl LX loss to the Seahawks.
