The government sharply raised petrol and diesel prices for Tuesday, with motor spirit jumping Rs12.90 per litre and high-speed diesel increasing Rs3.72, as authorities continued their daily fuel-pricing regime amid volatility in global oil markets.
Under the revised rates effective September 8, the ex-depot price of petrol rose to Rs358.77 per litre from Rs345.87, while high-speed diesel increased to Rs381.77 from Rs378.05, according to a Petroleum Division notification issued Monday.
The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) revised the prices under the federal government's new petroleum pricing mechanism, which allows fuel rates to be adjusted on a daily basis in response to movements in international oil markets. Pakistan shifted to daily fuel-price revisions in July as global energy markets became increasingly volatile.
Diesel prices are particularly important for Pakistan's transport, agriculture and industrial sectors, while petrol prices directly affect millions of motorists and motorcycle users. The latest increase follows several volatile daily adjustments in recent days, underscoring the rapid swings under the new pricing mechanism.
