Canva Debuts 'Craft': How Its New AI Image Generator Works

Canva has launched its first publicly available AI image generation model, Canva Craft, aiming to compete directly with offerings from OpenAI, Google, Meta Platforms, and ByteDance. Developed by Canva Research with contributions from Leonardo.Ai - a company Canva acquired in 2024 - Craft utilizes a two-stage architecture.

The first stage interprets the user's prompt to create a composition plan covering spatial relationships, relative scale, visual hierarchy, and text placement. The second stage translates that plan into an image at up to 2K resolution across more than 30 aspect ratios, supporting text in 55 languages.

Unlike rival models trained primarily on photographs, Craft was trained on millions of human-made templates from Canva's library, including posters, menus, presentations, and infographics. Canva claims this approach provides greater precision, consistency, and control, particularly regarding legible text and accurate object placement.

The model debuted at fourth place on DesignArena's leaderboard for AI image generation, trailing three OpenAI GPT-Image models but outperforming Google's Nano Banana 2.1. Canva is currently developing faster, more cost-efficient versions dubbed Craft-fast and Craft-ultrafast, alongside advanced editing and reference-image capabilities.

Industry analysts suggest that this move marks a significant shift for Canva, transitioning from a design platform to a generative AI powerhouse. By leveraging its massive database of professional templates, the company is addressing the common industry struggle of generating coherent text within AI-created images.

The integration of Craft into the existing Canva ecosystem is expected to be seamless, allowing users to generate complex layouts without needing external design software. This strategy aligns with the company's long-term goal of democratizing high-end graphic design for non-professionals.

As the competition in the generative AI space intensifies, Canva's focus on utility and template-based training could prove to be a decisive advantage. The company plans to roll out further updates to the Craft engine throughout the remainder of 2024 and into 2025.
