Harry chooses freedom, William bows to duty: Two different paths

Since stepping down as senior working royals, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's relationship with the rest of the family has been fractured. The two brothers chose two entirely different destinies, with Harry choosing freedom while William bowed to duty.

William is the heir to the throne and diligently takes on the responsibilities that come with that position. But Harry, while remaining in the public eye, has the freedom to speak and act more openly than his brother because he is outside of 'The Firm.'

Since Harry and Meghan quit royal duties 6 years ago to pursue commercial deals, the public has viewed it as a rejection of Britain. Their criticisms of the institution only deepened the rift.

To their critics, they seek the privileges of royalty without the accompanying responsibilities. Royal correspondent Richard Palmer argues that a turnaround is still possible, and the blueprint is Princess Diana.

Like Harry, Diana became a private individual after her divorce, yet she retained the nation's affection. Harry may lack that luxury, but he possesses something more valuable: freedom.

It is a freedom to say what William never can. Diana did not impress the monarchy, but she knew how to win over the media and the public.

The author advises the Duke to make peace with the press and reclaim the image of the fun-loving prince Britain once adored. He also urged Harry to channel his raw emotion into meaningful causes.

The author further suggested that Harry and Meghan could help bridge the gap with the family by ceasing the use of their royal titles and being known simply as Harry and Meghan Sussex. The expert explained: "He would still be the King's son and the next king's brother, so his words would still carry weight, but it would create a clear distinction between him and the official royals."

If he can be seen doing the right thing for the right reasons - carrying the responsibilities of royalty without enjoying its privileges - while William becomes increasingly restricted in what he can say and do, a turnaround could be achieved.
