Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has set the target for completion of 5,734 water filtration plants by June 2027, reiterating that access to clean drinking water is a fundamental right of every citizen. Chairing a special meeting of the Punjab Saaf Pani Authority, she assigned the responsibility of monitoring water filtration plants to the respective assistant commissioners.
Public committees will also be constituted under the supervision of assistant commissioners to oversee the filtration plants located in neighbourhoods. The meeting decided to establish mobile maintenance units in every tehsil to ensure the repair and rehabilitation of water filtration plants.
Each mobile workshop will have plumbers and other technical staff to ensure timely maintenance and uninterrupted access to clean drinking water. The CM also approved the Last-Mile Water Supply Project to provide water to the worst-affected areas of Chakwal, Rajanpur and Rawalpindi.
Water supply schemes covering 256 kilometres in Chakwal and 1,780 kilometres in Rajanpur will be prioritised. Maryam was given a detailed briefing on the water bottling plants operating in four districts of Punjab.
The plants in Khushab, Dera Ghazi Khan, Rahim Yar Khan and Bahawalpur are producing 10,000 19-litre water bottles daily. The CM Water Bottling Project is benefiting 4.8 million people in a short period, while more than 75,000 bottles of water have been delivered to households under the initiative.
Separately, Punjab's biggest-ever initiative to revive the province's cinematic heritage and establish it as a hub of filmmaking is nearing completion, with Pakistan's first state-of-the-art Film City scheduled to be launched on December 15 under the vision of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif.
