Punjab CM Directs Enforcement of Ban on Smart Glasses and Other Spy Devices

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has directed authorities to ensure a strict ban on camera-equipped glasses and other spy devices across the province, following a surge in complaints regarding illegal surveillance. The directive comes days after the provincial government formally decided to prohibit various gadgets used for clandestine activities, including glasses, pens, watches, and other items equipped with hidden cameras and recording equipment.

A spokesperson for the Punjab Home Department stated that strict legal action would be taken against the unauthorized use, purchase, and sale of such equipment. The decision is primarily aimed at protecting citizens' privacy and personal information, with a specific focus on ensuring the safety and dignity of women and children in public and private spaces.

According to the spokesperson, the government has received numerous complaints regarding illegal surveillance, harassment, and blackmail facilitated by these sophisticated devices. Consequently, the administration has warned that severe penalties will be imposed on individuals found using everyday items containing hidden cameras for illicit purposes.

This move aligns with growing global concerns regarding smart glasses. Recent reports of secretly filmed footage of women appearing online have sparked international outrage, leading to petitions in Britain demanding a complete ban on their sale.

Smart glasses allow users to take photos, record videos, listen to music, make calls, and interact with artificial intelligence (AI) assistants. These devices gained significant attention this summer following a high-profile marketing partnership between beauty mogul Kylie Jenner and tech giant Meta Platforms.

Concerns peaked in Europe, particularly in Britain, amid reports that Meta is developing facial recognition features for these devices, which could further compromise individual privacy. The global response to these technologies has been swift.

Oslo, Norway, has already banned these glasses in schools to protect students, while France's CNIL data protection watchdog has urged heightened vigilance among the public. The Punjab government's decision reflects a proactive approach to addressing these modern security challenges.

Authorities have instructed law enforcement agencies to monitor markets and online platforms where such gadgets are sold. The provincial government has reiterated its commitment to upholding the fundamental rights of citizens, emphasizing that the misuse of technology will not be tolerated under any circumstances.

Public policy experts have welcomed the move, noting that the rapid advancement of wearable technology often outpaces existing legal frameworks. By taking this step, Punjab aims to set a precedent for digital safety and privacy protection within Pakistan.

The Home Department has also launched an awareness campaign to educate the public about the risks associated with these devices. Citizens are encouraged to report any suspicious activity or the illegal sale of spy equipment to the nearest police station or through the government's dedicated helpline.

As the situation evolves, the provincial government remains in contact with federal agencies to ensure a coordinated response to the challenges posed by emerging technologies. The ban is expected to be implemented immediately across all districts of Punjab.
