Punjab to Allow Province-Wide Basant Celebrations in March 2027: Sources

The Punjab government has decided to allow Basant celebrations across the province in the second week of March 2027, with plans to regulate kite-making, control prices, and introduce safety measures through legislation, sources said on Wednesday. The sources indicated that an administrative plan has been prepared to permit kite-making at designated locations, alongside a strategy to regulate the prices of kites and strings.

The provincial government will enact legislation for Basant, incorporating safety measures and rules governing kite-flying into the law, the sources added. The designated locations and specific regulations for the festivities are expected to be announced soon.

This initiative aims to revive the cultural heritage of the region while ensuring public safety remains the top priority for the administration. Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz had previously approved a 10-day Basant festival in Lahore from January 29 to February 7, 2027, following the festival's return earlier this year.

According to a spokesperson, celebrations will be suspended for one day on February 5 to observe Kashmir Day, reflecting the government's commitment to national observances. CM Maryam stated that Basant would help promote Punjab's historic cultural traditions and directed authorities to ensure the highest safety standards.

Lahore celebrated its first Basant festival in over two decades this past February after the provincial government lifted the ban on kite-flying. The event was seen as a significant step toward restoring the city's vibrant social life.

The three-day event was held under strict regulations, with streets illuminated and rooftop gatherings continuing late into the night. Authorities also introduced public facilitation measures, including free transport services to ensure that citizens could participate in the festivities without facing logistical hurdles.

Senior Provincial Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb described the successful celebrations as a victory for Lahore and Pakistan, promising an even more vibrant Basant in the coming year. The government is currently reviewing feedback from the previous event to further refine the safety protocols for the upcoming province-wide celebrations.

The administration is also coordinating with local law enforcement to monitor the quality of materials used in kite-making. By regulating the production of strings, the government aims to prevent the use of hazardous materials that have historically caused injuries during such festivals.

Furthermore, the government plans to launch an awareness campaign to educate the public about the importance of safe kite-flying practices. This campaign will involve community leaders and educational institutions to ensure that the message of safety reaches every household across the province.

As the date approaches, the provincial cabinet is expected to finalize the legal framework. This will provide a clear set of guidelines for citizens, ensuring that the spirit of Basant is celebrated in a responsible and joyous manner across all districts of Punjab.

The decision to expand the festival to the entire province marks a major shift in policy, signaling the government's confidence in managing large-scale public events. Officials remain optimistic that the 2027 celebrations will set a new benchmark for cultural festivals in Pakistan.
