The White House announced on Friday that US First Lady Melania Trump has successfully brokered a temporary ceasefire agreement between Russia and Ukraine in the strategic, Russian-controlled southern city of Oleshky, with the truce officially scheduled to begin on October 29. Residents of this southern Ukrainian town, which has remained heavily occupied by Russian military forces since the outbreak of the conflict in February 2022, have continuously reported a rapidly deepening food and humanitarian crisis over the past several months.
A formal White House statement released to the press detailed that both nations have formally agreed to temporarily halt all active military operations within the Oleshky region to permit the unobstructed entry of vital humanitarian aid and to prepare a secure civilian evacuation route.
This major diplomatic development comes at a critical juncture as Melania Trump's husband, US President Donald Trump, continues to exert significant pressure on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy to reach a comprehensive settlement with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The ongoing war has caused immense destruction across the region ever since Russian forces launched their large-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, displacing millions and severely crippling the nation's critical infrastructure and local economy.
In addition to this new ceasefire agreement, Melania Trump has personally remained deeply active in various humanitarian efforts aimed at safely returning vulnerable Ukrainian children who were seized and relocated by Russia during the war to their families. Addressing the severity of the situation, Melania Trump stated in her official remarks that Oleshky is currently a frontline war city standing dangerously on the absolute brink of total humanitarian disaster and widespread collapse.
She noted that the remaining local population inside the besieged town is comprised primarily of vulnerable elderly residents who urgently require immediate medical attention, essential medicines, nutritious food, and clean drinking water. Under the terms of the newly brokered truce, non-military observation and support teams from both countries will be permitted to visit local residents and safely coordinate transportation logistics for all civilians wishing to evacuate.
According to the White House briefing, an unnamed American media organization will accompany these designated humanitarian teams closely to document the entire evacuation and aid distribution process for the international community. Furthermore, administration officials pointed out that Oleshky, which is conveniently situated directly across the Dnipro River from Kherson, currently retains an extremely diminished population ranging from 1,700 to 2,000 residents.
This represents a dramatic drop from a pre-war population of roughly 24,000 people, compounded further by the catastrophic destruction of the Kakhovka Dam which left approximately 90% of the entire city entirely submerged under floodwaters.
