Sc Conducts Tech Driven Multi City Hearings

The Supreme Court on Monday conducted tech-enabled hearings across multiple locations, with benches, counsel and litigants participating from different cities through video link. Fully digitised case files supported the proceedings, allowing the benches to access case records without physically transferring paper books between the principal seat and branch registries. In one proceeding, Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Yahya Afridi presided over the bench from the Principal Seat, Islamabad, while Justice Shakeel Ahmad joined the bench from the Peshawar Branch Registry.

Counsel representing one of the parties participated from Mingora through the video link. The hearing brought members of the bench and counsel together from three locations, demonstrating how proceedings can continue without requiring every participant to travel to the same courtroom. The arrangement also enabled benches sitting at the Principal Seat to hear mattersfrom Quetta, Karachi and Lahore Branch Registries.

A three-member bench, headed by Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhail, heard cases of the Quetta Branch Registry; a two-member bench, headed by Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar, heard cases of Karachi Branch Registry; and a two-member bench, headed by Justice Ayesha A. Malik, heard cases of Lahore Branch Registry. The day's proceedings thus connected Islamabad with Peshawar, Mingora, Quetta, Karachi and Lahore.

By enabling branch registry matters to be taken up without moving benches, counsel, litigants or case records between cities, the arrangement supports continuity of hearings and makes more effective use of judicial time. It also gives litigants and counsel a practical way to participate in proceedings closer to their locations.
