A 65-year-old woman has been tragically killed in a fatal shark attack off Orient Beach in KuGompo, formerly known as East London, located in South Africa's Eastern Cape province, prompting local authorities to immediately close two of the area's most popular swimming beaches.
The victim, who has been identified in local media reports as a retired radiographer, was reportedly swimming with a group of friends and fellow enthusiasts shortly after 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 20, when she suddenly indicated that she was in severe trouble in the water.
Eyewitnesses at the scene stated that the woman had sustained massive and critical bite wounds to her thigh and upper arm areas. Despite a rapid rescue effort to bring her back to the shore, life-saving measures were unsuccessful, and she was unfortunately pronounced dead directly on the beach.
South African Police Service spokesperson Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa confirmed to reporters that local law enforcement officers arrived at Orient Beach following emergency calls and discovered the lifeless body of the woman bearing severe, open traumatic wounds. The KuGompo Police Station has officially opened a formal inquest into the incident.
Authorities stated that the victim's full identity and name will be officially released to the public only once her immediate family members have been fully informed of the tragedy. Following the incident, her remains were transported securely to the State Forensic Pathology Services for post-mortem examinations.
Meanwhile, the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality formally confirmed the fatality to the public. In response to the dangerous situation, the municipality announced the immediate closure of both Orient Beach and Eastern Beach until further notice, solemnly warning residents and tourists alike of a deeply "serious incident" along the coastline.
In a strongly worded statement published on its official Facebook page, the local municipality urged all beachgoers and water sports enthusiasts to exercise "extreme caution and to refrain from entering the water at the affected beaches." The administration further emphasized that heightened safety warnings were actively being issued at several other nearby beaches, advising the general public to "remain vigilant" at all times and strictly comply with all safety instructions issued by authorities.
Shark attacks in this specific region of South Africa's Eastern Cape are relatively uncommon, yet local marine life experts and municipal authorities maintain continuous monitoring systems. However, this sudden and unexpected event has sent shockwaves through the local community, reminding residents of the unpredictable nature of open ocean environments and prompting a temporary halt to coastal recreational activities in the affected zone.
