The Sindh School Education and Literacy Department has officially announced that all public and private educational institutions across the province will remain closed on November 9 in observance of Allama Iqbal Day. This decision marks a significant day of national remembrance, honoring the legacy of the poet-philosopher who envisioned the creation of Pakistan.
According to a formal notification issued by the provincial department on Wednesday, the closure is in strict accordance with the resolution passed during the Steering Committee on Education meeting held on February 12, 2026. The directive applies to all schools, colleges, and vocational training centers operating under the administrative control of the Sindh government.
In addition to the educational sector, the financial sector will also observe the holiday. The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) issued a separate statement confirming that all its offices, as well as commercial banks across the country, will remain closed on Monday, November 9.
This ensures that the public holiday is observed uniformly across both public and private sectors. Iqbal Day is commemorated annually on November 9 to mark the birth anniversary of Dr. Allama Muhammad Iqbal.
Widely regarded as the spiritual father of Pakistan, Iqbal's intellectual contributions remain a cornerstone of the nation's identity. His profound poetry and philosophical treatises provided the ideological foundation for the Pakistan Movement.
Historians note that Iqbal's address at the Allahabad session of the All-India Muslim League in 1930 was a turning point in the struggle for independence. By articulating the need for a separate homeland for the Muslims of the subcontinent, he galvanized the masses and provided the political vision that eventually led to the creation of Pakistan in 1947.
The provincial government has urged all educational institutions to organize special programs and seminars leading up to the day. These events are intended to educate the younger generation about Iqbal's 'Khudi' (selfhood) philosophy and his vision for a progressive, enlightened Muslim society.
As the nation prepares for the holiday, various literary societies and cultural organizations are also planning events to pay tribute to the 'Poet of the East.' These gatherings will feature recitations of his famous works, including 'Shikwa' and 'Jawab-e-Shikwa,' which continue to resonate with readers across the globe.
The announcement of the holiday serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by the founding fathers. It provides an opportunity for citizens to reflect on the values of unity, faith, and discipline that Iqbal championed throughout his life.
While the holiday brings a temporary pause to academic and banking activities, it reinforces the national commitment to preserving the intellectual heritage of the country. The government remains focused on ensuring that the day is observed with the dignity and respect befitting a national icon.
All administrative heads of educational districts have been instructed to ensure full compliance with the notification. Any institution found violating the directive will be subject to departmental scrutiny, as the government aims to maintain a consistent policy regarding national holidays.
