Stranger Things is expanding its universe with a live-action prequel series at Netflix set for release in 2028. The streamer has officially ordered Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure, which will take viewers back to the 1950s - three decades before the events of the original series.
The series will be filmed in New Mexico and feature a fresh cast of characters. While plot details remain under wraps, the setting and the Duffer Brothers' cryptic hint to "watch the skies" have sparked speculation about a possible extraterrestrial storyline.
Golden Globe-winning filmmaker Joe Wright will direct the first three episodes. "We've been dreaming of Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure for many years now, and to see it become a reality is surreal and exhilarating," the Duffer Brothers said in a statement.
The announcement comes after the original series wrapped up with its fifth season earlier this year. Since debuting in 2016, Stranger Things has become Netflix's biggest show, generating 1.2 billion global views across its first four seasons.
An exact premiere date is yet to be announced.
