For context, the post was made less than two weeks after President Trump ordered the renaming of Lake Ontario as "Lake America" amid the heightened trade war with Canada. Soon after the post was shared on social media, it even prompted Google to update its map application. The company stated that the changes were made after the US government's Geographic Names Information System officially updated the lake's name.
American technology conglomerate Alphabet's subsidiary Google released a statement that reads, "People using Maps in the US will see 'Lake America,' those in Canada will continue to see 'Lake Ontario,' and those outside of the US and Canada will see both names." At the time, within hours after President Trump signed the executive order, the Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney clapped back and said, "Canadians also know that naming reality means calling it Lake Ontario - then, now and always."
In January 2025, when President Trump ordered the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to "Gulf of America," both Google and Apple followed suit, updating their map apps to reflect the change for the US.
