Weekly Inflation Increases by 0.29pc

The Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI)-based weekly inflation increased by 0.29 per cent during the week ended on November 05, 2026, for the combined consumption group, the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) reported on Friday. According to PBS data, the SPI for the week reached 374.59 points from 373.51 points recorded in the previous week.

On a year-on-year (YoY) basis, the SPI increased by 12.31 per cent. The weekly SPI, with base year 2015-16=100, covers 17 urban centres and 51 essential items for all expenditure groups.

This data serves as a critical barometer for assessing the purchasing power of citizens across various income brackets. The SPI for the lowest consumption group (up to Rs17,732) increased by 0.86 per cent to 361 points from 357.92 points.

This segment remains the most vulnerable to fluctuations in the prices of essential food and fuel items, which often dictate the overall inflationary trend in the country. Likewise, the SPI for consumption groups of Rs17,733-22,888, Rs22,889-29,517, Rs29,518-44,175 and above Rs44,175 increased by 0.7 per cent, 0.52 per cent, 0.4 per cent and 0.1 per cent respectively.

These figures highlight a broad-based inflationary pressure affecting middle and upper-income households as well. During the week, out of 51 items, prices of 21 items (41.18 per cent) increased, 10 items (19.6 per cent) decreased, while 20 items (39.22 per cent) remained unchanged.

Analysts suggest that the rise in energy costs and supply chain disruptions continue to be the primary drivers behind these weekly fluctuations. The government continues to monitor these indicators closely to formulate fiscal policies aimed at mitigating the impact of inflation on the general public.

The PBS remains committed to providing transparent and timely data to assist policymakers in making informed economic decisions. As the country navigates these economic challenges, the focus remains on stabilizing the prices of essential commodities.

The persistent nature of year-on-year inflation indicates that structural reforms are necessary to provide long-term relief to the consumers. Market experts observe that while some items have seen a price reduction, the overall trend remains upward, necessitating a cautious approach toward monetary policy.

The central bank and relevant ministries are expected to review these findings in their upcoming sessions. Public concern regarding the cost of living continues to grow as the SPI reflects the rising burden on household budgets.

The government's ability to manage these inflationary pressures will be a key factor in the coming months. In conclusion, the latest report from the PBS underscores the ongoing struggle against rising prices.

With 41.18 per cent of items showing an increase, the economic environment remains challenging for the average Pakistani citizen.
