On Saturday night at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Saul "Canelo" Alvarez looks to return to the winner's circle and capture super middleweight gold by taking on unbeaten WBC champion Christian Mbilli. The pay-per-view fight on DAZN will be Alvarez's first in the ring since suffering a unanimous decision defeat to Terence Crawford in September 2025.
The 36-year-old Mexican (63-3-2, 39 KOs) steps into the ring as a challenger for the first time since his 2022 weight class promotion, where he fought Dmitry Bivol. Alvarez enters the bout with a record of 28 total fights against title contenders, including a mark of 25-3 in those championship bouts.
Coverage starts at 1 p.m. ET, with ring walks scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Mbilli (29-0-1, 24 KOs), at age 31, comes into the contest with almost two inches of reach advantage and an aggressive, pressure-fighting style. The Cameroonian-born Frenchman was promoted to world champion in January and drew with Lester Martinez in a split decision on the Canelo-Crawford undercard.
Boxing analyst Raul Marquez believes the bout may work out well for Alvarez stylistically. "Alvarez, you know, he's got great technique to deal with opponents who come forward because he knows how to box them very well.
And he's an excellent counter-puncher and excellent body puncher," Marquez stated. He tipped Alvarez by a unanimous decision but noted: "However, if Canelo fights like that against Mbilli" - as he did in his fight against Crawford - "it's going to be a very long night for him."
Hall of Fame broadcaster Al Bernstein is not as sure about it, tipping Mbilli reluctantly. "When you look at the fight from a boxing perspective and say, 'OK, who is more likely to win this fight,' I think Mbilli," he stated, mentioning Alvarez's age and the level of his decline.
Alvarez is a heavy favorite at -330, while Mbilli is priced at +250. The total rounds line is set at 10.5.
Fans around the globe are eagerly anticipating this matchup, as it promises to be one of the most explosive encounters of the boxing calendar this year. Promoters have ensured that preliminary bouts feature rising stars, adding even more excitement to the televised card.
Training camp reports indicate that both fighters have pushed themselves to the absolute limit during preparations in the lead-up to fight night. Ultimately, the performance in the ring will decide who walks away with the prestigious belt and bragging rights in the super middleweight division.
