Ciara Mageean, Two-Time Olympian and European 1500m Champion, Dies Aged 34

Ciara Mageean, an Irish trailblazing athlete, two-time Olympian, and European 1500m gold medallist, passed away at age 34 after a battle with cancer. The Irish middle-distance runner, a native of Portaferry in Northern Ireland, died at 6:30 a.m. on Sunday, November 1, her family confirmed in a social media post.

Mageean was considered one of the most gifted Irish athletes, with exceptional talent in the 1500m event. She represented Ireland at the 2016 Rio Olympics and 2020 Tokyo Games, displaying remarkable grit and determination throughout her sporting journey.

Mageean did not participate in the 2024 Paris Games because of an Achilles injury. An Irish trailblazing athlete, she started her career in hurling for a local club, Portaferry GAC, but soon realised her dream of representing Ireland at the Olympics.

Her running skillset was evident from her accomplishments at a junior level. She won 1500m silvers at the 2010 World Junior Championships and the 2011 European Junior Championships, setting the stage for a stellar professional career.

Mageean's hopes of making her Olympic debut at London 2012 were dashed after she suffered a gruesome ankle injury. She underwent a procedure in 2013 and, a year later, made a stunning comeback by winning the 1500m title in July 2014.

Mageean made her Olympic debut in 2016, but she withdrew from the 1500m heat at the semi-final stage after suffering an ankle injury. Despite setbacks, she continued to train rigorously and maintained her status as a top-tier competitor.

After a series of disappointments, Mageean finally secured the biggest win of her career at the 2024 European Championships in Rome. Her gold medal performance cemented her legacy in Irish athletics history.

She was diagnosed with stage four bowel cancer in May 2025. Throughout her treatment, she remained courageous and surrounded by her loved ones, inspiring fans across the globe.

Mageean tied the knot in October with her long-time partner, Thomas Moran, in a ceremony held in Belfast. The intimate wedding was a joyous occasion celebrated by close friends and family.

Tributes have poured in from sports bodies, fellow athletes, and fans worldwide, remembering Ciara Mageean not only as a phenomenal champion but also as a resilient and gracious individual.
