Democrats' Win Sparks Hopes of Economic Relief

The Democrats' sweeping victory in the US midterm elections has reshaped Washington's political landscape, raising expectations of greater fiscal restraint, easing inflationary pressures and potentially lower interest rates in 2027. However, the escalating conflict involving Iran and the resulting oil-price shock threaten to undermine the prospects of a broader global economic recovery.

With President Donald Trump facing a Democratic-controlled House of Representatives and Senate, investors are reassessing the prospects for additional tax cuts, government spending, trade policy and economic legislation. A divided Congress could constrain further fiscal expansion, potentially helping reduce government borrowing and inflationary pressures.

On account of the crushing defeat of President Donald Trump, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude dropped to $88.78 per barrel, declining $7.31, or 7.61pc, while international benchmark Brent crude fell $7.99, or 7.71pc, to $95.61 per barrel. Meanwhile, Murban crude (Platts) traded at $100.89 per barrel, down $1.27, or 1.24pc.

The Dollar Index slipped to around 101.4. The combination of lower international oil prices and a weaker US dollar could create favourable conditions for Pakistan and other emerging economies.

Stock markets in the US, Britain and Germany staged a broad recovery Wednesday as investors responded to the Democrats' sweeping victory. Wall Street led the gains, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average rising approximately 2.3pc, the S&P 500 gaining 1.7pc and the Nasdaq Composite advancing around 2.1pc.

Asian markets delivered a mixed performance amid initial volatility in technology shares. In London, the FTSE 100 recovered to advance approximately 1.25pc to 10,771.4 points.

Mining and banking shares provided support, with Fresnillo and Endeavour Mining gaining more than 6pc. Germany's DAX also advanced approximately 1.45pc to 26,241 points.

Gold prices surged approximately 3pc to $4,046.74 an ounce. However, the market recovery does not necessarily indicate that investors consider the global economic outlook secure.

The continuing Iran conflict, oil prices above $100 per barrel, renewed inflationary pressures and uncertainty over central-bank interest-rate decisions remain significant risks. Financial analysts suggest that while the immediate market reaction is positive, long-term stability will depend heavily on geopolitical developments in the Middle East and subsequent policy moves by the Federal Reserve.
