The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) will on Wednesday formally address the long-delayed local government polls in the federal capital and has summoned the secretary interior and chief commissioner. After a formal hearing a few days back, the commission had hinted at holding the LG polls as per the Islamabad Capital Territory LG Act, 2015.
The issue of LG polls had come up for deliberations following the lapse of the Islamabad Local Government (Amendment) Ordinance 2026, as the federal government failed to enact legislation in this regard. Consequently, the commission considered whether to conduct the elections under the Islamabad Local Government Act 2015.
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja chaired a special meeting attended by the members, secretary, and senior officers. The polls have faced delays since the term of the previous LG system ended on February 21, 2021.
Meanwhile, the case regarding the holding of LG elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, fixed for October 20, has been delisted. "It is hereby circulated for the information of the general public and litigants that the following case, fixed for hearing before the Election Commission of Pakistan on 20.10.2026, has been delisted," says a delisting notice issued by the ECP.
The notice further clarifies that the next date of hearing will be communicated in due course. This development comes after regular notices had been issued to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief secretary for personal appearance before the bench.
