Flour Prices Surge to Rs180 Per Kg in Hyderabad

HYDERABAD: Flour prices have surged to Rs168 per kilogram in the wholesale market and between Rs175 and Rs180 per kilogram at retail outlets in Hyderabad, further straining consumers amid record inflation. According to the Atta Chakki Owners Welfare Association, flour is being sold at Rs168 per kg, with a 10kg bag priced at Rs1,680 and a maund (40kg) at Rs6,720.

Association representatives stated that a 100kg bag of wheat is currently trading at Rs14,200 in the open market, making it difficult for millers to maintain price stability. Although the Sindh government fixed the price of a 100kg wheat bag at Rs12,500, official supplies are failing to reach the mills.

Association spokesperson Chauhan noted that wheat supply disruptions across Sindh have forced consumers to pay premium prices. He claimed that flour costs have risen by up to 70 percent due to the shortage of government-subsidized wheat and the influence of hoarders in the open market.

He further criticized the Hyderabad district administration for sealing mills and imposing fines, arguing that instead of punitive measures, the administration should focus on restoring the supply of government wheat to ensure affordable flour for the public. Market analysts suggest that the current crisis is a result of a disconnect between policy and ground realities.

The lack of oversight on hoarding activities has exacerbated the situation, leaving the common man to bear the brunt of the price hike. Local residents have expressed deep concern over the situation, noting that flour is a staple food item and its unaffordability is leading to food insecurity for low-income families in the region.

The Atta Chakki Owners Welfare Association has warned that if the supply chain is not restored immediately, the prices could climb even higher in the coming weeks as stocks deplete further. The district administration has yet to issue a formal response regarding the allegations of supply chain failures, though officials previously stated they are committed to curbing illegal profiteering.

As the situation unfolds, the public remains hopeful for government intervention to stabilize the market and provide relief to the citizens of Hyderabad. The ongoing economic pressure highlights the urgent need for a sustainable strategy to manage wheat reserves and distribution across the province.
