Former Detroit Lions Punter Kasey Redfern Dies at 35 After Battle with Brain Cancer

Kasey Redfern, a journeyman punter who played in four National Football League (NFL) games, passed away on October 13, 2026, at the age of 35, his family confirmed. Redfern had been battling a brain tumour since his diagnosis in April 2023 with a serious cancerous condition affecting the central nervous system known as CNS lymphoma, for which he had been receiving chemotherapy.

According to a social media post by his wife, Lauryl, Redfern began receiving hospice care on September 26. Following his passing, his wife stated, "He shouldn't have lived as long as he did, but he fought an incredible fight.

He smiled the whole way through, never questioned why, and always knew God had a purpose for this." Redfern signed contracts with seven teams throughout his career, including the San Diego Chargers, Carolina Panthers, Cleveland Browns, Dallas Cowboys, Atlanta Falcons, and Jacksonville Jaguars.

His journey through the league was marked by resilience and a constant pursuit of his professional goals despite numerous roster changes. After joining the Jacksonville Jaguars as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2014, he earned the starting job with the Detroit Lions in 2017.

However, his season was cut short after just one punt due to torn ACL and MCL injuries, which required extensive rehabilitation. He remained in the NFL until his retirement in 2019.

Throughout his career, he was known by teammates and coaches for his work ethic and positive attitude, even when facing significant physical setbacks. His transition to life after football was focused on his family and community.

The sports community has expressed deep condolences following the news of his passing. Many former teammates took to social media to share memories of his character and dedication to the sport.

His legacy remains one of perseverance in the face of adversity. Redfern is survived by his wife, Lauryl, and their two sons, Ollie and Logan.

The family has requested privacy during this difficult time as they mourn the loss of a husband and father who inspired many with his strength. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in the coming days.

The NFL community continues to honor his memory, reflecting on the impact he had on those who knew him both on and off the field. His battle with CNS lymphoma serves as a reminder of the fragility of life, even for those who appear at the peak of physical fitness.

His story of fighting the illness with a smile has resonated with fans across the country. As the sports world remembers Kasey Redfern, his family finds comfort in the faith and purpose he held onto until his final moments.

He will be remembered not just as an athlete, but as a man of profound courage.
