Pakistan clinched a thrilling four-wicket victory over arch-rivals India in their Group C clash at the Hong Kong Sixes 2024 on Friday, keeping their hopes of advancing to the next round alive at the Mission Road Ground in Mong Kok. The victory provided a much-needed boost after Pakistan suffered a narrow one-wicket defeat against defending champions the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in their opening encounter earlier in the day.
Batting first, India were bowled out for 88 in their allotted six overs. Shashank Singh top-scored with a fighting 40 off 11 deliveries, featuring two fours and five sixes.
Nitish Rana contributed 19 off 14 balls, while T Natarajan remained unbeaten on 12. For Pakistan, Abdul Samad was the standout bowler with 2/10, while Ahmed Daniyal and Mohammad Shahzad claimed one wicket each.
In response, Pakistan made a flying start as captain Abbas Afridi smashed five consecutive sixes in the opening over bowled by Krunal Pandya, collecting 31 runs. Khawaja Nafay continued the onslaught, striking five boundaries in the second over to push Pakistan past the 50-run mark.
Although Shashank dismissed Afridi (35 off 8) and Rahul Tewatia removed Nafay (41 off 12), Irfan Niazi sealed the victory in style by hitting a six off his first delivery. Samad remained unbeaten on seven as Pakistan successfully completed the chase.
The tournament, known for its fast-paced format, requires teams to play with six players per side. This win is crucial for Pakistan's campaign as they look to secure a spot in the quarter-finals.
The team management expressed satisfaction with the batting display, noting that the aggressive approach was necessary given the short nature of the format. Fans at the Mission Road Ground witnessed a high-octane performance from both sides.
The rivalry between Pakistan and India always draws significant attention, and this encounter lived up to the expectations of cricket enthusiasts worldwide. Looking ahead, Pakistan will need to maintain this momentum in their upcoming fixtures.
The coaching staff is focusing on refining the bowling strategy to ensure consistency in the remaining matches of the group stage. The Hong Kong Sixes has historically been a platform for innovative cricket, and this year's edition continues to showcase talent from various cricketing nations.
Pakistan's ability to bounce back from an early loss demonstrates the depth and resilience of the squad. As the tournament progresses, the competition is expected to intensify.
Pakistan's victory over India serves as a major morale booster for the players, who are determined to lift the trophy. The final standings of Group C will be determined after the conclusion of all round-robin matches.
