Pakistan Committed To Economic Reforms, Zardari Tells IMF

President Asif Ali Zardari has stated that Pakistan remains committed to fiscal sustainability, energy sector reforms, privatisation, and social protection, while ensuring inclusive and green growth. He made these remarks during a meeting with Jihad Azour, Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Middle East and Central Asia Department, at the Aiwan-e-Sadr on Tuesday.

The IMF delegation included Iva Petrova, IMF Mission Chief for Pakistan, and Mahir Binici, IMF Resident Representative for Pakistan. The president appreciated the IMF's continued engagement in supporting the country's home-grown reform agenda.

He also acknowledged the IMF leadership's confidence in Pakistan's efforts to implement reforms under the Extended Fund Facility (EFF) and the Resilience and Sustainability Facility (RSF). Jihad Azour acknowledged Pakistan's continued engagement with the IMF under the ongoing reform programme.

President Zardari highlighted that the government is focused on broadening the tax base and improving the efficiency of the energy sector to reduce circular debt. He emphasized that these steps are vital for long-term economic stability.

The meeting also touched upon the global economic challenges and their impact on emerging markets. The President noted that Pakistan is taking proactive measures to mitigate these risks through prudent fiscal policies.

Jihad Azour expressed his appreciation for the government's commitment to the reform path. He noted that the IMF remains a partner in Pakistan's journey toward economic recovery and sustainable development.

The discussion also covered the importance of climate-resilient infrastructure. The President pointed out that Pakistan is particularly vulnerable to climate change and requires international support for green initiatives.

Both sides agreed on the need for continued dialogue to ensure the successful implementation of the current programme. The IMF team expressed satisfaction with the progress made so far in various economic indicators.

The President concluded by reiterating that the welfare of the common man remains the ultimate goal of all economic policies. He stated that the government is striving to provide relief to the vulnerable segments of society.

The meeting ended with a mutual commitment to maintain the momentum of reforms to achieve macroeconomic stability and foster a business-friendly environment in the country.
