Pakistan has made a strategic change to its squad for the ongoing ODI Tri-Series, releasing wrist-spinner Sufiyan Muqeem and bringing in young left-handed batter Maaz Sadaqat as cover. According to a statement issued by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Muqeem's release was decided with the nature of Lahore's pitches in mind.
The spinner will now return to domestic cricket to continue his development. "Left-arm wrist spinner Sufiyan Muqeem has been released from the Pakistan men's squad, keeping in view the nature of Lahore pitches," the PCB stated in its official press release.
The 24-year-old has represented Pakistan in 4 ODIs, claiming 8 wickets, and has taken 30 wickets in 22 T20Is. His exclusion is seen as a tactical move to balance the squad composition for the specific conditions expected in the upcoming matches at the Gaddafi Stadium.
Meanwhile, Maaz Sadaqat has been added to the squad as cover for players dealing with minor niggles and could be included in the playing XI if required. The team management is closely monitoring the fitness of several key players ahead of the crucial fixtures.
"Left-handed batter Maaz Sadaqat has been added to the squad as cover for players carrying minor niggles," the board added. Sadaqat has played 6 ODIs for Pakistan, scoring 134 runs including one half-century, and has featured in 5 T20Is with 184 runs at a strike rate of 170.37.
The inclusion of Sadaqat provides the team with additional depth in the batting order, particularly in the middle and lower-middle sections. His ability to score at a high strike rate has been noted by the selectors as a valuable asset for the limited-overs format.
The team management remains focused on maintaining a competitive edge throughout the series. With the tournament progressing, the PCB is ensuring that all bases are covered regarding player availability and tactical requirements.
The updated squad includes: Shaheen Shah Afridi (c), Abrar Ahmed, Salman Ali Agha, Arafat Minhas, Babar Azam, Faheem Ashraf, Fakhar Zaman, Muhammad Ghazi Ghori (wk), Haris Rauf, Hasan Nawaz, Naseem Shah, Razaullah, Saad Baig (wk), Saim Ayub, Shadab Khan, and Maaz Sadaqat.
Fans and analysts are now looking forward to seeing how these changes impact the team's performance in the upcoming matches. The series remains a vital platform for players to prove their mettle ahead of future international assignments.
The PCB continues to emphasize the importance of domestic performance and fitness, ensuring that only the most suitable players are selected for the national side based on current form and pitch conditions.
