PM Warns Businesses Against Withholding Sales Tax

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday issued a stern warning to the business community, stating that any enterprise collecting sales tax from consumers but failing to deposit the collected amount into the national exchequer would face strict action and be denied any future concessions.

The Prime Minister emphasized that tax evasion undermines the national economy and will not be tolerated under any circumstances. During a high-level meeting convened to review the ongoing reforms within the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), the Prime Minister set a firm deadline of December 31, 2026, for the complete operationalization of production monitoring systems across all manufacturing sectors in the country.

He directed the relevant authorities to remove all bureaucratic obstacles hindering the installation of these automated systems. The Prime Minister highlighted that the government is actively strengthening camera-based monitoring under the faceless taxation system to ensure transparency and improve tax compliance.

According to the Prime Minister's Office, the administration remains steadfast in its commitment to realizing Pakistan's full tax potential by digitizing the revenue collection process and minimizing human intervention. The meeting was briefed on the progress of the monitoring systems, which have already been successfully installed in the sugar, cement, tobacco, tiles, and fertilizer sectors.

Furthermore, the installation process is currently underway in the textile, packaged water, juice, and milk sectors, marking a significant step toward a documented economy. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif specifically commended several leading companies for their proactive and voluntary cooperation in installing these systems.

The recognized entities include Nishat Mills, Alkaram Textile, Alkaram Cotton Mills, J.K. Spinning Mills, Surti Enterprises, Interloop Limited, Faisal Spinning Mills, Ibrahim Fibres Limited, Sapphire Textiles Limited, and Nishat Chunian.

To ensure the integrity of these technological interventions, the Prime Minister directed the Ministry of Information Technology to conduct comprehensive audits of the installed systems. These audits are intended to assess the effectiveness of the monitoring tools and ensure they are functioning as intended to prevent revenue leakage.

Official reports presented during the meeting indicated that enforcement measures and structural reforms have successfully generated an additional Rs1.3 trillion in tax revenue over the past three years. This growth is seen as a positive indicator of the government's efforts to broaden the tax base.

In a separate but related economic initiative, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif ordered the doubling of financing for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). He directed that the current allocation of Rs1.1 trillion be increased to Rs2.2 trillion by 2028.

The Prime Minister noted that this strategic increase in financing is designed to boost economic growth, encourage entrepreneurship, and facilitate large-scale job creation across the country. He urged financial institutions to simplify the lending process for SMEs to ensure that the benefits reach the grassroots level of the economy.

Concluding the session, the Prime Minister reiterated that the government's economic agenda is focused on stability and growth. He called upon the business community to fulfill their national obligations by paying taxes honestly, which in turn will allow the government to provide better public services and infrastructure for all citizens.
