Ron Howard says Jim Carrey 'believes in' Grinch sequel

Renowned director Ron Howard has revealed that he has developed a compelling concept for a sequel to the holiday classic, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, though he remains tight-lipped about the specific plot details. The 72-year-old filmmaker shared these insights while attending a film festival to promote his upcoming documentary, Avedon, which is scheduled for release on Netflix this autumn.

Howard explained that the creative spark for the project occurred about a year ago. According to the director, Jim Carrey is supportive of the vision, though the actor maintains a professional stance that they must ensure the project is truly exceptional before committing.

Howard candidly acknowledged the immense challenges faced during the production of the original 2000 film, describing it as a grueling experience for everyone involved. A significant hurdle during the original production was the extensive prosthetic makeup process, which Carrey found particularly difficult to endure.

Howard noted that modern advancements, specifically motion-capture technology, could offer a viable alternative. He pointed to Carrey's previous collaboration with director Robert Zemeckis, where the actor successfully utilized motion capture to portray Ebenezer Scrooge, suggesting this could eliminate the need for the grueling physical makeup sessions of the past.

The creative team is reuniting for this potential project, with Howard confirming that the original film's writers - Alec Berg, Jeff Schaffer, and David Mandel - are returning to pen the script. Howard also reminisced about the extreme measures taken during the first film's production to help Carrey cope with the makeup process.

The studio famously hired Richard Marcinko, a military expert known for training personnel to endure imprisonment and torture, to provide the actor with psychological techniques to manage the discomfort. Development on the sequel has been underway since June, spearheaded by Universal and Imagine Entertainment.

While Howard is expected to return to the director's chair, Brian Grazer is slated to produce the project. As of now, negotiations with Jim Carrey regarding his official return to the iconic role are ongoing, leaving fans hopeful for a return to Whoville.
